This is our sixth Social Media Monday post – it’s amazing that we’ve already been doing this for six months!
Last month, we learned how to set up a Business Page on Facebook. Today, Angela Mondor of GeekyGirl.ca shares her tips for those that have a Twitter account, but are wondering what their next steps are on the path to success with tweeting. This is post will also be helpful for those who have been using Twitter but want to be successful at tweeting or would like to learn strategies for streamlining their news feed.
Twitter may be a new idea for you. Since it is a really great place to have conversations with people, it can help you communicate with your target market.
It is true that each of your updates on Twitter are only 140 characters long, but if you think of Twitter as a method of communicating in a conversational manner each of your updates will be a small piece of that conversation.
Your goal with Twitter is to start conversations with people by creating an update that serves as the first step in that conversation. Then, as people reply to your update, you can continue the conversation. Following this mindset will allow you both to get to know each other better.
Your Twitter feed can have attached pictures and videos as well as lead your readers to websites for more information.
When you read through your Twitter feed, you should find that the tweets are not just about you, or about your product; therefore updates you post should include other things of interest as well. Each post should be continuation of a conversation that you are having with your followers.
How To Gain More Followers
Make sure that as you are using Twitter that you are also connecting with other people by engaging them in conversations that they have initiated. The best advice that I can give you to gain more followers is to start following people that you find interesting, or who might find you interesting, and then engage them in conversations.
When you begin to follow someone, look through their recent updates. If they asked a question, and you have an answer; or if they have started a conversation and you’d like to chime in with an opinion; then click reply and provide your two cents. Mostly likely, they will then engage with you and have a conversation.
Following this strategy is the very best way to gain followers — the best kind of followers. You want to engage with people who are participating on Twitter, and especially those who are willing to have conversations with you.
Using Twitter Lists
Another smart way to gain followers is to specifically target certain people and put them on list.
For example, I have a Twitter List called “Winnipeg” and whenever I connect with someone I believe is in Winnipeg (or in Manitoba) I put them into my Winnipeg Twitter List. That way I can easily see what my fellow Winnipeggers are talking about.
I also have a group of hockey moms who I speak with on both Facebook and Twitter. When I want to discuss hockey with other moms I can go to the list and have a conversation with them.
For each of your interests you will want to make a list and put the people who discuss that topic on it. It is almost impossible to read all of the updates that come across your Twitter feed. Rather than being overwhelmed by all the tweets in the twitterverse; it’s easier for you to put people on Lists and then explore one particular interest list and see what they have recently posted.
There are two different kinds of Lists – public and private. If you want to have a list of prospects, first follow them, then put them on your prospect list and make sure your prospect list is private. They will be notified that they are on one of your lists, but not the name of the list.
Schedule a reminder in your calendar to review that List on a regular basis. Budget in short periods of time to read your prospect list’s updates, and then engage with them. This will allow you to build a relationship; they will get to know you and hopefully like you, and build trust. Then they will start to consider doing business with you!
If you simply follow your prospects and don’t put them on a list, it is going to be difficult for you to figure out where their updates are in the large stream of updates.
I’m currently following 3,508 people right now, and it is almost impossible to find my Hockey Moms in my stream without the List that I created. It’s also a public list that can be used by everyone (like the CAPSmanitoba list).
The nice thing about a public list is when it comes to sharing the other people who want to follow hockey moms, they can readily see who is on the list, and either follow the list, or choose to follow the people on the list themselves.
How To Get More Retweets
Please follow @CAPSmanitoba and converse with our webmaster, Anna Coleshaw-Echols. CAPS National is also starting to tweet leading up to our annual convention in December in Toronto, you can follow them @CDNspeakers. For our CAPS Manitoba members, please use that handle in your own posts if you’d like CAPS National to retweet for you, same goes for @CAPSmanitoba – FYI.
How Can My Tweets Get Found More Easily
The “Google” of Twitter is done by using popular or commonly used hashtags. Those are the pound signs followed by a word or two. As far as our commonly used hashtags, we have been using #CAPS2014 and #ProSpeak in the majority of our Twitter posts.
For Friday’s Speaker School, please use #SpeakerSchool2014 so that everyone can easily find your tweets about your AHA Moments while in “school”. FYI – Registration is still open until March 12th, you can register on Eventbrite.
