The launch of CAPS Manitoba’s 3rd Annual ProTrac emerging speakers program was super successful last Thursday night with our first ever Meet the Pro’s interactive roundtable session.
If you’ve not yet decided to partake in ProTrac, you have until January 15th to sign up. Please contact Dianne or Jacquie for more details or to register.
Here’s a recap of the answers that our CAPS Pros provided to those looking at entering the professional speaker business.
Q1: What was the biggest mistake you made in your first year as a professional speaker that you wish you could go back and do differently?
Q2: What was the best thing you did in the beginning that has made all the difference? Or something you’d recommend all ProTrac’ers do…
Deri Latimer, CSP
A1: My biggest mistake was not seeking out an association like CAPS; I was largely on my own and making it up as I went along.
A2: Joining CAPS, without a doubt! After that, the best thing I did was commit (to myself) to attending every convention and chapter meeting, unless I was away working, or had an important personal commitment. Then I implemented at least one thing from those experiences into the continued growth of my business.
A1: Trying to figure it all out by myself. You should use ProTrac, mastermind groups, a speaking coach, other CAPS members…whatever helps propel you forward. There are many tools available, especially through CAPS.
A2: Be yourself – everyone else is taken!
Stephanie Staples, CSP
A1: I didn’t believe that my message was important enough, special enough, that I was unique enough. Self-confidence in this field goes a long way. If you don’t believe in your message, no one else will either. Keep learning; keep asking questions; keeping striving to be better; keep growing by small steps in the right direction and will get you there.
A2: Perfect is highly overrated. Stop waiting for everything to be just right – your marketing materials, your talk, your wardrobe… Take what you’ve got right now and get started. You get good at speaking from speaking. Take every opportunity, every situation and make it work to your advantage.
A1: Promoting myself to the general public; I did not target my clients.
A2: Identify one new client, do the research and decide what you can do for them. i.e. a keynote for their next conference, a workshop for their staff, or an article for their website. Contact your targeted client and sell it. If you do manage to sell it, and they are happy with what you did – WOOHOO! Now you can do more marketing, product development, promotion and networking around this event.
